AFP. 5 March 2003. Thousands of Bangladeshis protest against Iraq war.

DHAKA -- Thousands of Bangladeshis, including teachers, writers and
journalists, demonstrated Wednesday against a US-led war on Iraq and
urged world peace.

The demonstrators, numbering about 8,000 according to organisers and
witnesses, converged at a memorial in the capital Dhaka and sang
anti-war songs.

"Iraq is being disarmed to occupy its oil reserves and to establish
complete rule of the American imperialists," architect Sheikh Muhammad
Shahidullah told the rally.

"Bangladeshis want world peace and today we are here to express our
solidarity with peace-loving people across the world.

"Unless we can stop this war on Iraq, American imperialism will be
established across the world bringing misery to millions," he added.

Leftwing parties also joined the rally, with the Communist Party of
Bangladesh handing out a statement which warned that "unless this
Anglo-American attack (on Iraq) is stopped, humanity will be faced with
disaster."
