AFP. 5 March 2003. Thousands rally against Iraq war in Spain demo. MADRID -- At least 10,000 students shouting anti-war slogans and moving in rhythm to live drumbeats and reggae music rallied Wednesday in the Spanish capital against an anticipated US-led attack on Iraq. Organizers claimed as many as 50,000 people -- 30,000 at the initial demonstration and more who joined them during the march to Madrid's central square, Puerta del Sol -- took part in the march. The protesters, organized by a student union and a Communist coalition, attacked the policies of Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, one of the strongest supporters of US plans for military action against the Baghdad regime of President Saddam Hussein. Students waving placards reading "Yes to no, no to bombs" were joined in the anti-war protest by school students across Spain taking part in a 24-hour school boycott to signal their opposition to US President George W. Bush's hardline policy against Iraq. "Not a soldier, not a euro, for a bullet for this war for oil," said student union leader Miriam Murciano at the end of the march. Other participants waved signs marked simply "Peace" or "Not Bush, nor Saddam, nor the servile Aznar." A final rally included readings of poems by Spanish actors and a music concert. The school boycott on Wednesday was heeded by students in 95 percent of Spain's high schools and 80 percent of its universities, the student union said. In Barcelona, 6,000 students protested, also shouting "Yes to books, no to bombs", according to police figures.
