Ananova. 6 March 2003. Thousands in Scottish anti-war demo. EDINBURGH -- Thousands of demonstrators have taken part in an anti-war march through the streets of Edinburgh. The event was organised by the Stop the War Coalition to protest against possible conflict with Iraq. Demonstrators met outside the US Consulate and the University of Edinburgh before simultaneously marching towards the Scottish Parliament building. Robert Darroch, 70, of Clydebank, among a group of 1,000 protestors who gathered outside the university, said: "I remember when Scotland was bombed during World War Two and I don't want that to happen again." "It is my understanding that most of Scotland are totally against Tony Blair's actions over this and we just want him to see sense before it is too late." Martin Barnet, of the Stop the War Coalition in Edinburgh, said the protest had been arranged because of ongoing apathy towards a possible war in Iraq by many MSPs. He said: "We have been told that 50% of the people in Iraq are under the age of 15. We want Tony Blair to go home and look at his own children before making any decision to go to war, where many thousands of innocent people will be killed." "The actions of the Scottish Parliament have been downright unacceptable and this country's politicians will see that for themselves when the public go to the polls in May. "We want the parliament to make a considerable stance against this at Westminster. After all, the Scottish Socialist Party, and Scottish National Party and the Lib Dems have all spoken out against this." "The majority of MSPs who sit back and do nothing are undermining democracy.
