from Japan Today Friday, March 7, 2003 http://www.japantoday.com/e/?content=news&id=251822 Anti-war rallies planned throughout Japan for Saturday TOKYO - Protests against a U.S.-led war on Iraq will be held across Japan on Saturday by civic groups and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) dealing with international issues, and one group is even planning to march on an ice floe. The events will be held at the initiative of World Peace Now, a network that includes NGOs such as Asia Pacific Peace Forum and Amnesty International Japan. Gatherings and marches are also to take place on March 15, with NGOs and civic groups planning events to coincide with antiwar protests worldwide. On Saturday, a gathering will start at 2 p.m. at an outdoor music venue in Hibiya Park in Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward. A performance is planned by musician Shokichi Kina, who visited Baghdad in February, and there will be a talk by Edith Hanson, former head of Amnesty International Japan and currently its special advisor. Later in the day, the protesters will march through the Ginza shopping district, the organizers said. "We expect participants to total more than 10,000," said Ken Takada, a member of the World Peace Now executive committee. "We hope to gather all kinds of people, regardless of generation and affiliation." Civic groups and NGOs in cities such as Sendai, Nagoya and Osaka are also planning events such as gatherings, peace walks and photo exhibitions. In the village of Shari in Hokkaido, northern Japan, tourists and a local group plan to march on ice drifting off the Shiretoko Peninsula, and will carry signs protesting the U.S. war plans.
