AP. 8 March 2003. Thousands rally in Tokyo to oppose Iraq war.

TOKYO -- Thousands of people filled Tokyo streets Saturday to oppose a
possible war against Iraq, holding up colorful "No War" banners and
chanting anti-war slogans.

The rally, organized by over 100 civic groups, demanded the Japanese
government stop its support for an anticipated U.S.-led war against
Iraq.

"We don't want war," participants chanted in unison as they rallied
through Tokyo's busy Ginza commercial district. Some held placards
decorated with drawings of flowers.

"World Peace, now!" they shouted.

Earlier Saturday, the Japanese government expressed support for an
amended U.N. resolution proposed by the United States, Britain and Spain
to deliver an ultimatum to Iraq to disarm by March 17 or face war.

But protesters said the international community should continue to seek
a peaceful solution rather than allowing the United States and its
allies to attack Iraq.

"I oppose (U.S. President George W.) Bush's one-sided attack on Iraq,"
said Hiromitsu Kizu, a Buddhist monk, wearing a white robe and a conical
hat.

"I oppose any killings. Nothing else but nonviolent action can save the
world."

Similar anti-war rallies were planned in other major Japanese cities
Saturday.
