AP. 8 March 2003. Taiwanese women's rights groups protest against Iraq
war.

TAIPEI -- Taiwanese women's rights groups marked International Women's
Day Saturday by protesting against a possible war in Iraq.

Standing outside Taiwan's Foreign Ministry, dozens of women shouted
slogans and called on Taiwan's government to oppose a war.

Taiwan's government has not taken a public stance on Iraq, but has
repeatedly expressed support for the U.S.-led war on terror.

The protesters read out an anti-war declaration, expressing solidarity
with Iraqi women. The protesters called on Taiwan to provide
humanitarian aid to Iraqi women and children in the event of war.

"In war, women are always the victim, and once war is over, they have to
bear responsibility for reconstruction as well," activist Wu Wei-ting
said.

One elderly woman who was forced into prostitution by the Japanese
during World War II spoke of the horrors of war.

The protesters concluded their rally by holding up roses and forming the
words "No War" in the direction of the Presidential Office, which is
near the Foreign Ministry.
