Groups of US soldiers in Iraqi Kurdistan: Kurdish
military source

DAHUK, Iraq, March 11 (AFP) - Three small groups of US
soldiers have set up bases in Iraqi Kurdistan to
prepare for the arrival of more troops ahead of an
expected US invasion of Iraq, a Kurdish military
source said.

"There are Americans, soldiers, a group of 12 men in
Dahuk, about 10 in Arbil and 10 in Sulaymaniya," a
senior Kurdish officer said. He refused to specify to
which units the soldiers belonged.

"They are preparing for the arrival of American
troops" who are to open a northern front in Iraqi
Kurdistan in a war with Iraq, the officer said.

The groups are positioned near three airstrips that
Washington had asked the Iraqi Kurds to make ready for
use by mid-February, Kurdish officials said.

The airstrips are at Harir near the city of Arbil, at
Bakrajo near Sulaymaniya, and at Bamarni near the
Turkish border, where Turkish troops have been
stationed for years to fight the Kurdistan Workers
Party (PKK) seeking independence for southeast
Anatolia.

Following the Turkish parliament's decision last week
to shoot down a proposal to allow US troops to pass
through Turkish territory into northern Iraq, all
three would become essential for a deployment of US
troops and equipment in the region.
