AFP. 15 March 2003. Hundreds of Egyptians demonstrate in Cairo against Iraq war. CAIRO -- Several hundred people, surrounded by some 1,500 police, demonstrated outside the University of Cairo Saturday against any US-led war on Iraq. "With our blood, with our soul, we will defend Baghdad," demonstrators chanted. They also shouted: "Baghdad is Arab, Kuwait is American," as they waved Iraqi and Palestinian flags and portraits of the late Egyptian president, Gamal Abdel Nasser. In addition to the strong police presence at the demonstration, trucks of anti-riot forces were also stationed along the street leading to the Israeli embassy, only about a kilometre (half a mile) away. One banner read: "France, the symbol of civilisation, rejects war and America, whose history is sinister, wants war."
