AFP. 15 March 2003. Hundreds of Greek Cypriots stage anti-war protest at
US embassy.

NICOSIA -- Hundreds of Greek Cypriot protestors staged the island's
largest anti-war rally so far, gathering outside the US embassy Saturday
demanding "no more Iraqi blood for oil."

Around 2,000 people of all ages marched on the embassy and gathered
outside the fortress-like building shouting anti-American slogans and
calling US President George W. Bush a "murderer."

A large police cordon shepherded the protestors into an open space
across the road from the concrete barrier that guards the embassy
compound.

Banging drums and blowing whistles, the noisy crowd waved Cypriot and
Iraqi
flags and banners reading: "Don't attack Iraq," "How many lives per
litre" and "No blood for profit."

The protestors were drawn mainly from the communist Akel party -- the
largest in the island's governing coalition -- as well as the Green
Party, trade unions and student groups.

They opposed Cyprus "directly or indirectly" facilitating any US-led
war.
