US to use nuclear weapons, expert says

RBC, 18.03.2003, Moscow 15:52:32.In the war on Iraq,
Americans are planning to use over 300 kinds of new
weapons, Deputy President of the Academy for
Geopolitical Problems, Colonel-General Leonid Ivashov
reported at a press conference in Moscow. According to
him, recently the USA has been actively working on
developing penetrating low-power nuclear missiles. At
the same time, Ivashov pointed out that such
intensification of development of new kinds of weapons
had been last registered in the USA right before the
war in Yugoslavia.

"There is no doubt that the USA will use nuclear
weapons, which have already been delivered to US
military bases in Kuwait," the Russian military expert
reported. In Ivashov's opinion, if the coalition
troops meet powerful resistance, the USA will use
nuclear weapons. "Losing the war is unacceptable for
the Bush administration," Ivashov pointed out.

RUSSIAN EXPERT ON WAR IN IRAQ

MOSCOW, March 18, 2003. /From RIA Novosti
correspondent Pyotr Goncharov/--The war in Iraq will
be a lengthy one and will infer heavy losses,
Colonel-General Leonid Ivashov, the Vice-President of
the Academy of Geopolitical Problems, said on Tuesday.

"For the United States, the war in Iraq will be far
from an easy stride," announced the general. Despite
the USA having amassed a powerful fighting force, it
will hardly be able to achieve a blitzkrieg, he said,
adding that Iraq had a distinct advantage where land
forces were concerned and that once the US launched a
land operation, the war would become a lengthy affair.

In Ivashov's opinion, the States would conduct the war
in accordance with "the classic scheme": a crippling
stroke on the state management infrastructure and
Iraq's troops' command posts with the help of aviation
and cruise missiles, a stroke on what remains of its
air defence systems, and a stroke on Iraq's land
forces.

"US specialists are planning to test up to 300 types
of new weapons during the military action in Iraq,
maybe including low-power nuclear warfare," said the
general.

Duma official on Iraqi conflict

RBC, 18.03.2003, Moscow 16:17:09.The beginning of
military operations in Iraq would mean that the
security system, which was created in the world after
World War II, has collapsed, State Duma Defense
Committee Chairman Andrey Nikolayev has told
journalists. Moreover, it would question the
functioning of the UN as the instrument for preserving
the current order.

Iraq will use every resource during a possible
military confrontation, he noted and added that the
USA would not miss the possibility to test new
weapons.
