Bogdan Aurescu: New US anti-missile shield covers Romania, is more efficient
and costs less

-The Alliance should grant attention to regional security and we should have in
view partnerships with states from the Black Sea, the Caucasus and Central Asia.

The new variant of the US anti-missile shield could cover Romania.

This formula is considered much more efficient by Bogdan Aurescu, the secretary
of state for strategic affairs in the Foreign Ministry.

Aurescu declared during the show “Bucharest punkt Bonn” produced by HotNews.ro
and Deutsche Welle, that the defense system proposed by the Obama
administration supposes lower costs than the previous one. Aurescu added that:

• Romania wants the NATO antimissile system to cover more efficiently the
territory of allied states so that the principle of indivisibility and security
among NATO member states could be observed.

• The new formula suggested by the Obama Administration is better, more
efficient that the one suggested by the Bush administration.

• Practically, the NATO antimissile system will be built to have as its basis
the US antimissile system.

• I appreciate that the American strategic partner has updated us about making
decisions on the new system.

• Indeed the new system is more flexible, more efficient, supposes lower costs
and covers the whole territory of Romania and from this point of view this
country has an important advantage.

• Obviously, these talks will be held within the Alliance.

• At this moment it is premature to say anything about technical questions, we
should have in view the debate within the Alliance. They will be made public
when they become clear.
....
• The new Strategic Concept is a question of major interest.

• The Alliance should grant attention to regional security and we should have
in view partnerships with states from the Black Sea, the Caucasus and Central
Asia.

• Another very important element we would like to be maintained in the new
concept refers to the policy of NATO enlargement.

• These are important progress factors of the soft-power type.
