Reuters November 18, 2009 NATO sees US troop decision before December meeting BRUSSELS: NATO plans a meeting in December to discuss raising the number of troops in Afghanistan and is confident President Barack Obama will have laid out his plans for U.S. troop levels by then, an alliance spokesman said. James Appathurai said on Wednesday the NATO meeting would take place after a gathering of NATO foreign ministers on Dec. 2-3, but did not specify the date. "I am confident that before the force generation meeting, the United States will make its announcement, not only on troop levels, but very much in a broader context on approach and strategy," Appathurai told a news briefing. Another conference to generate forces for other NATO missions will be held on Nov. 23, but it will not discuss Afghanistan deployments, Appathurai said. Obama is weighing several options for boosting the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan, including the possibility of sending up to 40,000 more soldiers. He said in an interview with CNN on Wednesday he was "very close" to a decision and would make an announcement "in the next several weeks".
