Missile defense director says Alaska in strategic position

ANCHORAGE, Alaska: The director for the nation's missile defense agency says
Alaska is strategically located for missile defense.

Sen. Begich and Gen. Thomas Katkus were on hand as Lt. Gen. Patrick O'Reilly
spoke Tuesday afternoon at the Commonwealth Club.

O'Reilly says the threat is growing, and more countries are developing capacity
to build missiles themselves, in addition to missiles being openly available on
the arms market.

He says Alaska is the closest point to Iran, North Korea, Southern Asia and
other known threats to the U.S. [It is the closest part of the United States to
Russia.]

"Alaska is in a strategic position for a large dominance or large percentage of
the threats that we are very concerned about, not only today, but ones that
portend to present problems for us in the next couple decades," O'Reilly said.

O'Reilley is in Alaska as part of his routine visits to the missile defense
complex at Fort Greely.
