Gen Kayani to attend Nato meeting

ISLAMABAD: Chief of the Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani will leave for
Brussels on Monday to attend the Nato’s chiefs of defence staff meeting.

Informed sources said that various sessions during the two-day meeting opening
on Tuesday would focus on the progress made in the ongoing operations and the
New Strategic Concept for Nato. Chiefs of defence of all the 28 Nato member
states, 35 chiefs of defence of partner countries and troop contributing
nations will be present.

This would be the first visit of the army chief to Nato headquarters after the
announcement by the US president for sending another 30,000 troops to
Afghanistan and ‘re-adjustment’ of Nato’s various security posts close to
Pakistan’s border, which many defence analysts believe could lead to more
infiltration of militants into Pakistan, particularly after the US troop surge.

Nato’s two strategic commanders, Adm Stavridis (Supreme Allied Commander
Operations) and Gen Abrial (Supreme Allied Commander Transformation), the
commanders of the Joint Force Commands Lisbon, Brunssum and Naples as well as
Gen McChrystal, Commander ISAF, Lt-Gen Caldwell, and Commander Nato Training
Mission for Afghanistan will participate in discussions on Nato’s operations.

With regard to military aspects of the New Strategic Concept, the Military
Committee has invited former US Secretary of State Dr Madeleine Albright, the
chairperson of the group of Strategic Experts who are contributing to the
development of Nato’s new Strategic Concept.
