Latvia Will Continue Its Participation in NATO Response Force

Today, Latvian Minister of Defence Imants Liegis informed participants at the
meeting of the NATO defence ministers organised in Istanbul about Latvia’s
commitment to provide 390 Latvian National Armed Forces (NAF) soldiers for the
coming years to the NATO Response Force (NRF).

Minister Liegis addressed the participants of the meeting, emphasising: “I am
pleased for the opportunity to give our commitment and readiness to respond
along with the Allied forces to any security risks the Alliance would meet.”

Minister Liegis stated that Latvia will also continue its obligations in the
future and will continue international security enforcement activities in the
operation in Afghanistan. The decision on the readiness of the soldiers for the
participation in the next NRF planning cycle is based on calculations of the
available funding for the next years, as well as the ability of the NAF to
prepare and train soldiers for participation in NRF duties.

Three NAF soldiers are currently on NRF duty.

The NATO defence ministers also discussed the situation in Kosovo and
Afghanistan during the meeting, as well as Alliance budget planning and the
priorities of infrastructure development.
