Czech News Agency February 10, 2010 CR to increase annual contribution to NATO Prague: The Czech Defence Ministry will add extra several tens of millions of crowns to its regular contribution to NATO this year in view of the financial trouble NATO faces in connection with the recession and its expenditures in Afghanistan, Defence Minister Martin Bartak said Wednesday. "NATO members have agreed that additional money for NATO's operation is clearly necessary. In the present phase our [Czech extra] contribution stands at several tens of millions [of crowns]," Bartak told journalists at a meeting of the Czech military command in Prague. The money will be provided from the Defence Ministry's budget. The ministry's regular annual contribution to NATO is 500 million crowns. Now the sum will further increase, ministry spokeswoman Lucie Kubovicova told CTK. If the members' contributions were further to increase, it would have to be discussed on NATO soil, said Bartak. According to the Natoaktual server, NATO recently made it clear that it lacks 400 million euros (an equivalent to over 10 billion Czech crowns). NATO defence ministers reportedly agreed in Istanbul last week to provide an extra contribution worth an equivalent to 12 billion crowns altogether. The Czech Defence Ministry sees its 2010 budget cut by 7 billion crowns compared to what was originally planned.
