It seems that the answer to my question would be obvious, but I don't know
language composition or ANTLR very well. And I haven't yet read the book.

I'm trying to write a translator that will convert a date string to an
alternative format, but only when the date is in a certain, specific context.
That is, I only know the date string should be converted once I get to a rule,
and by then the date term is several nodes down in the tree. How can I go
about changing the date text from within the rule?

Thanks much.
