You don't need OpenACS to use AOLserver with PostgreSQL.
OpenACS is a web toolkit to build web applications on top of AOLserver
and PostgreSQL/Oracle (for now). It comes with a bunch of applications
ready for use and which you can build upon. Such applications would be a
content management system, calendaring, news, bulletin boards, templating,
etc.
OpenACS 3.2.5 is the latest in the 3 series. Currently version 4 is on
alpha stage.
