Oh, I know.  Frankly, I'm annoyed (not to the point of actually doing
something, yet) that Tcl will build under MinGW out-of-the-box but
AOLserver won't.

Is there a real downside to only building AOLserver with gcc (other than
the lack of full 64-bit support on platforms that have it)?
