We're using a hacked version of 2.6 that has support for double
CLOBs. The AOLserver that produced the above output hung shortly after
restart. Other servers hang hours after restart and after many calls to
the Oracle driver. So, I can't make a direct connection between that
driver and our dead threads problem.

I think this is definitely worth a try. If you could send me
the diff between 4.0.3 and the SF Bug #858030 fix, I would be grateful.
