No, this is a good start.  AOLserver 4.0.5 should be okay, but you
definitely want to use the most current nsopenssl beta, which is
currentl v3_0beta21 in CVS.

It sounds as though the problem is pretty reproducible in your
environment -- if you could find some time to test the latest nsopenssl3
beta and let me know if it still occurs there, we can take it from
there.
