Not that I remember.  Sun may have made noises, but now they're
going full blast into open source.

Yep.  OpenVMS was just a name.  Like OpenWindows and
The Open Group.  It was just another release of VMS.

Sun is in the process of releasing Solaris 10 as open source

This will probably be on par with the OpenDarwin/Mac OS X
hybrid, not like OpenVMS/....
