It may work for some things, but I've definitely encountered problems, particularly with DirectX and with debug configuration builds. From what I understand, part of the problem is that Microsoft is using a new debug format and has also started to compile a few of the modules in the SDK with the /GS flag, causing link errors with VC++ 6. I believe the last SDK that didn't have this issue was February 2003.
