Marc, I think I am seeing something different here. Although I don't have truss on my SGI - I ran a par against the base 1.3.3 server engine. Attached are the results. My configuration does have cache enabled. Garbage collection is being performed. Each of the active processes is consuming between 3-4% of the cpu time. This seems consistent between the two releases.
Response times for low usage appear quite acceptable - and no noticable differences appear between apache 1.3.1 and apache 1.3.3. Differences appear with loads increase. In this case, the loading per proxy copy stays at 3-4% cpu loads. However, processor time doesn't increase above 50% (except for occational spikes). With the 1.3.1 server, loading increased above the 50% range - and spiking was continous. This appears different from eric cooks description where processor load continued to increase due to the garbage collection calls. par output.... from child server....
