thanks - I have gone back to ver 1.1 - problem went away.
I suspect something in my DBM not quite right. I am using mod auth dbm on another machine with 1.31 - it takes a AuthUserFile - and doesn't complain - but is bent out of shape by AuthUserDBMFile.
