    Hi Ken:

    In WWW 143.4, you wrote:

Well, the problem may be my own faulty search techniques. When I got
to www.apache.org, the choice that looked most promising was "Server
documentation", but when you get there nothing looks good. I finally
selected "Search for keyword" to look for htaccess. This gives a large
number of hits, but only gives filenames and the none of the first
half-dozen or so seemed to have what I wanted.

The FAQ accessible from www.apache.org does have the question "How do I
set up Apache to require a username and password to access certain
documents?", but when you get there is says to use mod_auth,
mod_auth_db, or mod_auth_dbm. The documentation for them was not
    enlightening.

I seem to be wandering around looking at system management
instructions, when what I really want is user instructions. I don't
know if you have them on your site or not. Or even if they belong
there, although you might think that they do if .htaccess syntax is
    http server specific.

Earlier, I found a great description and tutorial at ncsa (aside from
the fact that their .htpasswd file is broken). I don't have the url
handy at the moment, but it was one of the first hits when searching
for htaccess on altavista. It is because of that description that I
know as much as I do.

    Hope this helps ...

    - Rob
