That "howto" page is quite outdated, however. Since the introduction of RedirectMatch, there is another technique for this problem that doesn't involve mod_rewrite. See http://httpd.apache.org/docs/urlmapping.html#redirect We should probably try to get rid of, or at least clean up, that howto page for the 2.0 docs.
