Do your network have TLD? If none then you will also have to edit the hosts file in the terminal you want to access the site.
I think it's also possible to use mod rewrite to forward remote host + query string from ape client to server. But this will require few modifications with the client script. The current script relies heavily on sub-domain which is impossible to use in a network with no TLD. Knowing Mootools, it will be easy to override the core without touching it.
