There is currently an effort to rewrite the ape core (version 2.0) under active development, primarily by Weelya, the creator of the project. It has not reached a stage where it is usable yet. It's very possible to use APE in a production setting. If I were doing any significant deployment, however, I would be sure to hire or contract with a qualified C developer who is familiar with network programming, event loops etc. to both maintain your requirements for APE and to work directly on the APE product itself. This is in the true spirit of open source.
