Hi.
Thanx for your answer but I'm still having problems.
I thought my VirtualHosts were messed up so I rebuilt all of them, all
other sites are working fine.
For some reason the asterisk solution ( 127.0.0.1
*.ape.local.apetest.local ) in etc/hosts doesn't work.

Do I have to configure anything else?
I'm on Ubuntu 10.04.

P.S.
Thanx for clearing up why the numbers have to change, now I have a
clearer picture.
