I'm more of an intermediate C hacker. Digging in autoconf files sounds
less fun than playing with APE.

I didn't really want to, but I finally installed a Linux distro in a
virtual machine.

To answer your question, not having this distro would have reduced my
administrative overhead and freed up some hardware resources.  I'll
live.

I know the tone of my message has been somewhat negative, but I do
