If you are planing on developing an app for intranet of 500 PCs the chances are that they should be in the same network already sharing a common DNS and 'domain' server so setting it up should be a breeze.
If it is for an internet application there should be a public domain where you could add the needed subdomains. Either way I believe you wont have a hard time deploy your APE application, is more complicated to set the local developing APE environment then a live production server.
