I've realised that this only happens if I refresh the page a few times.  So 
what's happening here?  If my user crosses off the page then comes back a 
few times in one browsing session, it's a bit inconvenient if APE doesn't 
respond.

The only way to fix it is to close down the browser and reopen it.
