Tried amazon on the free tier. Since I was just starting everything was
just time consuming since you are basically in charge of everything,
updating system, installing and getting dependencies, just headaches if you
ask me. After the year you will at least be paying $20+ a month.

You should try WebFaction, I pay less than $10 a month and everything just
works for me. I don't run any high performance application/server or high
traffic site thought.

The only reason I would go to amazon is if I'm working in application which
is rapidly growing or already has a really big userbase and scalability is
a concern.
