Hi there,
and sorry for not participating the discussion for such a long time.

I percieved that the 'official' Apertium Android app should have the goal
of providing example code on how to integrate Apertium offline translation
into your own app.
Further, it should have a minimum of permissions and enable developers to
showcase and test their work from a phone.

This is very far from developing a full-feature app with a cool Android 4
interface, OCR, SMS translation, TTS, STT and a zillion of scary
permissions (internet + read SMS + read SD card should scare you off
unless you really trust the source of the app).

I might be wrong in my percievings, as there is of course users expecting
to be able to use the translator app to something usefull.

My opinion is that stuff can go in the 'basic Apertium app' if 1) it
doesent require scary permissions and 2) it doesent make the app harder to
understand as example code on how to integrate Apertium offline translation
into other apps.

We can, on the side, make a super cool 'Apertium extednded' app with scary
permissions, loads of cool visual libraries (like side bar, horizontal
swipe etc like my last commercial app - see
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dk.dr.drnyheder ) where we
play around with stuff that might break or disappoint users.

Note that this app would be in direct competition with our potential
adopters and some of the commecial translation apps out there, and I
personally think it would be OK to take money for that app or put ads in it
(the money should probably go to the app author for maintenance work).

But if we truly look at usefullness for an end user, we should include
options for online translation for pairs not available offline... and
ultimately at using other translation services than our own.... you can
imagine where we end:

That said I'd love to add language detection to our current 'simple' app,
and use of the online API, and that would substantially add to the
usefullness, also as example code.

Yours,
Jacob
