I'll tell you why. I am old enough to be a BASIC and FORTRAN programmer and I remember how many bugs were due to implicit declaration. Having to declare a variable saves you from misspelling bugs (e.g. typing "simofinputs" instead of "sumofinputs" and not getting any complaint from the compiler, just to find that you had computation errors or divide-by-zero bugs later). Here is a proposal: have an option in the compiler. People who want to have implicit declaration of variable could use a compiler switch that would use a different DTD without IDREFs, etc. Does this make sense? MIkel -- Mikel L.
