My mailer Libremail started in September 2002 and availlable on Internet
since June 2003 can now use a translator to display email in another language.
Of course, it is easier to think to that when the person who develop its
own mailer is also interested by automatic translation.
As Libremail is a commande-line series of tools you could say there is a
trivial solution to do translations. Something like :
voirfmail mail_file | apertium ... | less
I started like that and in fact a command of that kind is used internaly
for the translation.
But even if Libremails works in console mode, it is not always necessary
to input a full command for each operation to do. To view a series of
emails, 3 tools can be used together :
- vmaildir : to explore a list of directories which may countain email
files,
- vmailsj : to explore the email files (sender, subjetct, date) of a
particular directory,
- vmailfic : to explore the content of a email file.
For these 3 tools, we can use :
- arrows to move in the list (or in the text of the email)
- enter key to select a directory or a email (or to download attached files),
- escape key to return to the previous program,
- letters for other operations like :
- r : reply to a email,
- t : transfer (forward) a email,
- n : create a new mail,
- j : "joindre" attach a file to the mail,
- c : copy something (the email or the address of the sender)
- s : suppress (delete) a mail
- u : undelete it (when still in the trash directory)
- m : modify (edit) a mail not presently sent
etc...
several of these operations are done by other command-line tools
directly called when typing the right letter on the keyboard.
So, the new thing the vmailfic command does is to accept two new
commands :
- l : to set the original language of the email (or the way how it
will be translated),
- T : to translate the email (Upper case because t has another meaning
since 2002),
- T again : to switch back to the original language.
When watching another mail of the same directory, the choice done with
the l command (or even T command if l call was forgotten) is kept until
another l command is used to change it.
To interface Libremail (version 2.4 or any future one) with a translator,
you just need to write a file called trad-libremail with a content like
this one :

The #!utf-8 ( #!u would be presently enough) directive is required
only if the mailer is used on a computer with ISO8859-1 or compatible
charset when the translator needs UTF-8 to work correctly.
The opposite directive #!iso8859 (or #!i ) also exists.
This evening (1st time I see that) sevral servers on free.fr seem to
be down. So watch libremail website on tuxfamily.org .
