Dear Apertiumers,
this is your president speaking ;-)
Ekaterina ("Katya") Ageeva sent this message a couple of days ago and
she reports that not many people has volunteered to help her with the task.
Basque--Spanish is a fine case in which Apertium may be used to
understand text written in a language one does not understand. Katya's
tool implements a way to measure how much MT helps in these situations.
This is a strategic project for Apertium, where we develop many language
pairs connecting a small language to one of the main languages around it
with the objective that speakers of the small language can go ahead and
write websites and blogs solely in their language and non-speakers
understand what they write. It is also a hot research topic at the Univ.
of Alacant.
This message should have convinced some of you to write back to Katya!
All the best
Mikel

Greetings,
My name is Ekaterina Ageeva, I am currently working on Assimilation
Evaluation toolkit for Apertium language pairs as a GSoC student. In a
few days, we will be starting to evaluate the language pairs using
this toolkit, and I am looking for someone who could help us out with it.
We will start with Basque-Spanish language pair. If you have a good
command of Spanish (not necessarily your native language) and no
knowledge of Basque, you could help us to conduct the evaluation. It
will take approximately 30 minutes some time this week, and the task
will be to fill in the gaps in a Spanish text with some words left
out. In some cases you will get a parallel text in Basque or a
machine-translated Spanish text to help you. All evaluations will be
conducted on the Web, so the task is really down to typing a few words
into a form.
The more participants, the better the evaluation, so if you could
possibly find 30 minutes to complete the task, please consider helping
us. If you would like to participate, please write to me in the next
few days.
The upcoming pairs for evaluation are Tatar - Russian and English -
Kazakh, so if you have a good command of Russian but do not know
Tatar, or know someone who speaks Kazakh but does not speak English,
please also e-mail me. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Ekaterina Ageeva
