Hello, I have some proposals for changes to the wiki Installation pages.
I have two concerns. First, everyone will be accustomed to the current placement of information. Second, the Apertium wiki is deep in information, built by many people over a long period, and I have no wish to loose information, or spoil what I find to be one of the most charming wikis I have ever browsed. == Background A week and a half ago I was entirely new to Apertium, and installation of a development environment caused me trouble. The Apertium wiki contains a lot of information, very good information, but now disorganised. I found myself working across three pages, with many other pages I felt I may have missed (I found another page this morning, not in the category 'installation', where it arguably should be, http://wiki.apertium.org/wiki/How_to_bootstrap_a_new_pair ) There is a lot of work I could look at on the wiki, but this has sucked me in. == The proposals I have a set of new/revised pages. These have been prepared by cutting and pasting the originals, preserving all current material. The changes are too many to list, with much re-ordering. The new pages would be, === Revised installation front page - Deflect users who want tools (the page is called 'installation' and they could easily arrive here) to 'tools' - Main entry "Using package repositories and virtual environments" Put these two on a level and up front. They are the way forward for most people. So these options are first, not compiling. - Remove all references to compiling (prerequisites etc.) - A link to a modified 'Minimal installation from SVN' page - A link to "Installing language data" === Install language data how-to Gathered on one page. - Language data will need to be compiled, but if using packaged apertium-core the prerequisites are fewer. - If you have a dev environment, you want this information in one place, not mixed with other instructions. == Install grammar libraries Separate page suggesting Debain users try the packages - After that, point to compile instructions === Revise "Minimal installation from SVN" (more like "apertium core by compiling") - Full prerequisite info here (the only place it is relevant) - Move some material. No need to start with warnings, due to revised front page. Language and CG3/HFST data installation can now be linked. I do understand if this is too much, in too sensitive an area of the wiki. But then, I wish all the good information I have found in the last week was easier to find...
