Hello:
I am interested in working on the language pairs
Italian > Spanish, Spanish > Italian
As a check, I am translating the revised Spanish text into Catalan.
My first language is British English, but I also know Italian, Spanish,
French, Portuguese, Galician and Catalan, with varying degrees of
competence.
I use the first four languages every day, as I am a professional translator
(into English, mainly from French), I live in Italy and I speak Spanish at
home with my wife who is from Galicia (hence the Galician). Also, part of
my family lives in Brazil (hence the Portuguese).
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, I worked with Xerox Corporation in
Rochester, N.Y., USA, where I did a lot of work on the improvement of
technical texts translated from English into Italian (with some involvement
also in Spanish and French).
I am, and have been since the 1970s, more of a user of computers than an
expert, so I downloaded the "Simpleton" tool and I am translating, as a
hobby, not for commercial reasons, some chapters of books on history.
My first remark is that the quality of the Spanish to Catalan is much
better than that of Italian to Spanish, probably because you have done more
work on that language pair, rather than because Catalan is possibly more
similar to Spanish.
I think that the quality of the Italian > Spanish language pair could be
improved with additions to the dictionaries and to a few grammatical issues.
I look forward to hearing from you with suggestions on how to proceed so
that any work I do can help to improve Apertium in general and not solely
the output of my own "Simpleton".
