Hello Apertium community,

I am writing to announce that the codebase for Openwords webapp is now
available on our Github repository (link below). Openwords is a free and
open source language learning webapp. Openwords is meant to be an open
platform that allows instructors and universities to control the content
and problems on the Openwords webapp - with problems ranging from sentence
translation and conjugation (both relevant for the Apertium community) to
listening and many more. Openwords supports any human language. A brief
description of Openwords is available on our Github readme.

What are we looking for from the Apertium community?

Apertium is open source and thus like-minded. We are about language
learning and you are about machine translation. There is natural overlap.
And we're looking for a community of people interested in building OERs
(open educational resources) for many different languages.

And importantly there is technical overlap between Openwords and Apertium.
We created a markup language for our problems - The Openwords Markup
Language (OWML). This is a simple text based, human readable code for
representing the content of individual language learning problems.
Openwords webapp reads this code and presents problems to the learner.

For example, it is possible to generate a large number of learning problems
using either parallel texts, or using the Apertium machine translation
system - and outputting problems into OWML. And we hope to collaborate with
your community.

We are also looking for partnering universities, NGOs, or businesses to
'pay themselves' and also our team to build lessons together, which are
then OERs for the world. And we can of course build these lessons by hand
or with more clever automated tools. While the main benefit from
collaboration with the Apertium community would be technical, I'm
mentioning this model in case some decision maker can initiate that kind of
collaboration.

I have also registered an IRC channel for Openwords as follows.
#openwords

I will be at our IRC channel for much of the day today in case you have any
questions. You can also email me at marc.bogonov...@gmail.com

If you want to learn more about us then this article written about
Openwords will serve as a good introduction. You can also read our Github
readme.

I'm completely available any time. Don't hestitate to reach out.
Thank you,
Marc
