There was absolutly no problem about your request for "adopting an unreleased pair" ans looking for a mentor. Several years ago, this mailing list was a possible way to get help about developping language pairs. Now, there are less answers for these questions, may be because the (about) 2 guys who were very active on this mailing list become less active. Another reason is a main change in Apertium project that was done 6 days ago. Previously, the project repository was on sourceforge.net using subversion software. Now, it started to be on github using gitsoftware. That means a lot of work for people of the project management commitee and few other people that may have been very busy from last week up to now and probably longer. For GSOC projects, the proposal is to use IRC to have contacts with mentors. One year I accepted mentoring for several subjects like adopting a language pair. But I am not very used to connect to IRC, and with only one computer and one screen, I would not be able to do efficient work and following the chat at the same time. And as no GSOC student contacted me that year, I prefered not subscribing as a mentor for the following years. Anyway, if you don't mind waiting one day for an answer, I can answer you by email. But, if I answer so late to your emails, one reason is I just read them this afternoon. I usually download non professional emails once a day in the evening. You may have sent your first one after I did that last Monday. And yerterday, if I downloaded emails again, I did no read all of them in the evening. Some general information. For a general information about how apertium works, the French Wikipedia page gives details : https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apertium If you don't speak French, just use a translator. For starting with Apertium, after installing Apertium software and one or two language pairs, the first thing to learn is to add words in dictionnaries with their translation. So, you will need to know the XML syntax used in a morphological dictionary (monodix), and in a bilingual dictionary (bidix). In a monodix, a new word needs genarally only one line to be defined. On this line, you will have the word (lemma), the invariant part and a reference to a paradigm which defines variation possibilities for this word (for instance about 42 possibilities for a French verb). As in a language, a lot of words obey to the same paradigm, that's a way not to write very often the same thing. So, you need to understand the XML syntax used in dictionaries, including paradigms, and then, you will be able to add words and their translations in a language pair. After doing that, the next step will be to learn transfer rules. You will need then to apply grammar rules, change correctly gender from a language to another, reordering words and other things like that. Every thing that does a text translation not to be only separate individual words translations. About the (official) Apertium website now. I did not look at the GSOC proposal for this project, but probably few people are able to mentor it. Let watch who is mentoring this subject and contact them. As to me, I rather work to an alernative website : http://apertiumtrad.tuxfamily.org which does not exclude non released pairs.
