Personally I am using "How To Bootstrap a New Pair" guide (http://wiki.apertium.org/wiki/How_to_bootstrap_a_new_pair) and starting with two monolingual directories before initialising the bilingual directory. This gives more troubleshooting opportunity for example you can follow the README in the monolingual directories and test using "echo houses | apertium -d . nya-morph" and "echo houses | apertium -d . nya-tagger" this will help you understand the pipeline (which modes.xml is all about). Useful for debugging. What I've learnt is that "casa" is Spanish or Portuguese for "house" so one place to start would be to replace "casa" with the Hausa word for house.
How does your language form plurals? If it is like mine - with a prefix - then you will encounter the same hurdle that I am trying to get over!
