#LMGTFY The Social Media Minimum Age Bill comes into force on December 10.
Distinct from the legislation, codes of practice for *Age-Restricted Material* were developed by industry under the eSafety Commissioner's codes regime. First registered on June 27, the Age-Restricted Material codes come into effect on December 27. See https://www.esafety.gov.au/industry/codes. The YouTuber saying that from the 27th of December "all internet users will also need to obtain a digital id to access any and all internet" is wrong. These developments have happened through consultations held over most of 2025 (see https://www.esafety.gov.au/about-us/industry-regulation/social-media-age-restrictions/consultation). IIRC the eSafety Commissioner has been studying age estimation / verification technologies via public consultations for three years or more. Anthony Albanese has made many speeches on age verification for social media.
