‘Basically a free for all’: Robodebt expert’s warning on AI rules vacuum

The Albanese government’s new policy for AI use within government does
little to reduce the risk of more automation scandals while economy-wide
regulation has been left to a “free for all”, according to renowned
legal academic Terry Carney.
The University of Sydney Emeritus Professor — whose tribunal rulings and
advocacy exposed the illegality and cruelness of Robodebt — blasted the
“light touch” approach and weak guidance for bureaucrats in his
inaugural Carney Public Lecture last week.
“Guardrails that were going to be applied more generally across the use
of AI have been dropped in favour of basically a free for all and a
reliance on internal government guidelines and frameworks,” Professor
Carney said.
