This is another Muth's Truth that geographically about the great State
of Nevada, but this reality is being played out coast-to-coast on a
daily basis. The truth in this column seems to be: Politicians lie;
mindless media syncophants repeat their lies unchallenged and/or make
up their own.

At any rate, it is more proof this govt is no longer working for the
people. Trash it.

MUTH'S TRUTHS - Worshipping the Obamessiah

A Las Vegas teacher was invited to go on President-elect Barack
Obama's train ride to Washington yesterday and was mentioned by name
in an Obama speech in Baltimore. To which Rosa Mendoza had this to
say: "I felt like the clouds opened up and the angels just poured
bliss over me."

Oh, brother. Is this cult-like worship or what?

But it's what Obama actually said that I found particularly
interesting in this life-changing experience: "I will be thinking of
middle-school teachers like Rosa Mendoza, who is giving her students
the chance to fulfill their God-given potential."

What's interesting is the fact that Ms. Mendoza is giving her students
the chance to fulfill their God-given potential, not in a traditional
public school, but in a CHARTER school. The kind of charter school the
Nevada State Board of Education put a moratorium on a year ago (since
lifted). The kind of charter school the teachers union regularly
opposes as a threat to their monopoly on educational mediocrity.

I wonder where all the children of Nevada's elected officials who
oppose school choice send THEIR kids?

Old Habits Die Hard

The funniest thing to come out of the frothing reactions to Gov. Jim
Gibbons' budget proposal has been the continued attacks on him for
rigidly adhering to his "no new taxes" pledge.

Why, just this morning the Las Vegas Sun editorialized that higher
education "must not be decimated just because one governor backed
himself into a corner with a foolish campaign promise not to raise a
single tax or fee."

Hello? News flash: Gov. Gibbons proposed a gig-enormous $292 MILLION
tax hike in his budget. It was in all the papers. Including the Sun.
You could look it up.

Democrats and the Left are so used to slamming Jim Gibbons for his tax
pledge that they can't even stop slamming him for his tax pledge after
he did what they've been demanding he do for months and broke it. You
just can't please some people.

The Devil's in the Details

The running line in Nevada's current budget war is that Gov. Gibbons
is slashing the budget 34 percent and cutting spending by some $2
billion. As Jon Ralston points out in his column today, Gibbons
himself has been fueling these figures, including a claim in his State
of the State Address that his proposed budget "is $2.2 billion smaller
than the one we submitted just two years ago."

But according to Mr. Ralston, the budget Gibbons submitted two years
ago was $6.8 billion and the one he just submitted is $6.1 billion.
Now, I went to publik skool for a few years, so maybe my math is
off…but that would appear to me to be a spending reduction of just
$700 million, almost half of which is being made up by Gibbons'
proposed $300 million tax hike.

So if these numbers are even remotely accurate, it appears the
government only needs to tighten its belt by about $400 million. So
what's all the whining and kvetching about?
