VCS Mourns Loss of Senator Byrd;
LA Times Reports 500,000 War Casualties

Sad News, as Senator Byrd Passes
Yesterday, Senator Robert C. Byrd passed away
at the age of 92. He was a champion of veterans who led the successful
effort to pass the "Persian Gulf Veterans Act of 1998," the law
expanding healthcare and benefits for veterans who deployed to the Gulf
War. Because the Gulf War continues through the present, the Gulf War
veteran benefits he secured are also available to Afghanistan War
and Iraq War veterans.
VCS will always remember Senator
Byrd as a true friend of our Constitution. He advocated for veterans'
health needs and he opposed the now-failed Bush Doctrince of
pre-emptive, unilateral war of aggression.

Finally, the press starts to wake
up to the escalating and shocking human toll nine years of war has had
on our military. The L.A. Times reports the
number of U.S. military casualties caused by the Iraq and Afghanistan
wars is more than 500,000. The real
total is 537,099, according to VA, because VA also
counts veteran patients with TBI, mental illness, and warzone-acquired
diseases - categories not counted in misleading and incomplete Pentagon
reports.
The Army Times reports
on the the military's struggles related to the severe shortage of
medical personnel. VCS believes the number of suicides rises, in
part, due to the lack of medical professionals, especially mental
health professionals (other factors include multiple deployments, the
lack of medical exams, and discrimination against veterans with mental
health conditions).

Last week, VA Secretary Eric
Shinseki met with the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans on their
20th anniversary. In his presentation, he
congratulated the NCHV on all of their hard work and success. He also
described VA's five year plan to end veteran homelessness. VCS thanks
Secretary Shinseki for his resolve.
June 27 is now National PTSD Awareness Day,
thanks to a resolution authored by Senator Kent Conrad (D-ND). His
efforts are solid evidence PTSD is being taken more seriously by
legislators. VCS commends Senator Conrad's diligence, especially for
the hundreds of thousands of veterans diagnosed with PTSD. His efforts
serve to fight stigma - discrimination - against veterans.
