Win Without War

Dear Phyllis:

This afternoon - two days after the release of classified military documents  on the Afghanistan war by WikiLeaks - the House of Representatives is  likely to vote on whether to approve the Obama administration's request  for $33 billion more for the war.

Now, more than ever, it's time for Congress to say no to the Pentagon's war funding bill. Click here and take action now.

This is particularly true in the absence of Congressional hearings on  the serious questions that the leaked documents raise about the futility  of the war and the misleading accounts that have been provided to  Congress and the American people. A veteran Member of Congress told  me today that not one of the briefings that he has had on Afghanistan  ever reflected the grim portrayal of the war revealed by these  documents.

Join Win Without War members and activists from across the country and tell your Representatives to say "no" to Pentagon war money.

The release of these classified documents has raised  greater public attention - and public doubts - about the war in  Afghanistan. They underscore the reality that the Pentagon-led Afghanistan strategy is built on quicksand.

They include detailed accounts, for example, of how the Pakistani  government--which receives over $1 billion a year from the  U.S.--is supporting attacks on U.S. troops by the Taliban.

A  previously hidden Civil Affairs Report from 2007 gives a stark  appraisal of the attitude of Afghans toward the government: "The  people of Afghanistan keep loosing (sic) their trust in the government  because of the high amount of corrupted government officials. The  general view of the Afghans is that the current government is worst  (sic) than the Taliban." This makes any counterinsurgency strategy  mission impossible to achieve regardless of the number of soldiers who  are sent into harm's way.

It is unconscionable to send American men and women to Afghanistan  to risk their lives for a strategy that is built on quicksand.

Act now and call on your Member of Congress to do the right thing and vote no on the  Supplemental Appropriation for the war in Afghanistan.
