Thanks Tim/Matt, Right, the BOTH example is what I'm looking for. Great, didn't realize that adhoc would work! The use case is this WIP project https://github.com/ropensci/phylodiv where the idea is to let users quickly visualize biodiversity of taxa of a phylogeny (e.g., comparing clade A vs. B, species A vs. B, genus X vs. genus Y, etc.), and there's a lot more possible user questions I can handle if I can include multiple taxa in a map API query. So I think adhoc may be fast enough to give users that quick response they'd need for exploring many questions quickly (much faster than downloading full occurrence data, and just a bit slower than density maps).
