I guess you refer to a filter like:
attr=value
instead of:
(attr=value)

At the moment, the parser will complain because, as you said, it follows the 
standards.
But, it might be a good thing to relax it a little to accept those kinds of 
simplified 'hacked' filters.
Since the API's goal is to facilitate LDAP, I think you're right and it makes 
sense.

It would be great to create a JIRA issue about it.
